The global Ismaili Muslim community mourns the passing of their beloved 49th hereditary Imam, Mawlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV, who died peacefully in Lisbon, Portugal, surrounded by his family. He was 87 years old.

Born on December 13, 1936, in Geneva, Switzerland, Aga Khan IV ascended to the Imamat on July 11, 1957, succeeding his grandfather, Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan III. For over six decades, he served as the spiritual leader of the Ismaili community, providing guidance rooted in Islam’s principles of compassion, knowledge, and social justice.

His leadership extended far beyond religious responsibilities. Aga Khan IV was a visionary philanthropist, establishing numerous initiatives under the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), one of the world’s largest private development organizations. In addition to his philanthropic work, Aga Khan IV was a strong advocate for pluralism and interfaith dialogue. He consistently emphasized the importance of building bridges between communities to foster peace and understanding. His dedication earned him numerous accolades, including honorary degrees and awards from governments and institutions worldwide.

The Diwan of the Ismaili Imamat issued a statement expressing profound grief, stating:
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un – Verily we belong to Allah, and verily to Him do we return. With profound sadness, the Jamat is informed that our beloved 49th hereditary Imam, Mawlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini, passed peacefully in Lisbon, Portugal, surrounded by his family.”

His Highness was widely respected for his intellectual depth, strategic foresight, and commitment to uplifting marginalized communities. As the longest-serving Imam in Ismaili history, his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

The global Ismaili community, along with world leaders and admirers, are expected to commemorate his extraordinary life and contributions in ceremonies to be announced in the coming days.
