Texas Measles Outbreak Worsens: 279 Cases Reported, “One Child Dies”

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has confirmed a growing measles outbreak in the South Plains and Panhandle regions, with 279 cases reported since late January. Health officials warn that the situation may worsen as measles is highly contagious.

Among the reported cases, 36 patients have been hospitalized, and tragically, one school-aged child has died. Officials confirmed that the child was unvaccinated and had no known underlying health conditions.

Given the rapid spread of the disease, authorities anticipate more cases in the affected areas and nearby communities. DSHS is actively working with local health departments to investigate the outbreak and implement containment measures.

Measles Risks and the Importance of Vaccination.

Although measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, international travel continues to reintroduce the virus. Experts warn that the current outbreak is one of the most significant in decades.

“We should be concerned. In 2024, we observed the highest number of measles cases in 25 years. About 60% of these cases require hospitalization, and nearly 40% involve children under 5, who are among the most vulnerable,” said Fatmia Cegic, a UNICEF immunization specialist.

Measles is highly contagious, spreading through airborne respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing. An infected person can transmit the virus to nearly 90% of unvaccinated individuals nearby. The virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves the area.

Measles Symptoms and Prevention.

Measles symptoms usually appear 7 to 14 days after exposure and include:

  • High fever
  • Cough and runny nose
  • Red, irritated eyes
  • A distinctive rash

Complications can be severe, particularly in young children and those with weakened immune systems. Health experts strongly recommend vaccination as the most effective way to prevent measles and protect public health.
