SUGAR LAND, TX – June 18, 2025 — Fort Bend County Judge KP George’s recent decision to switch from the Democratic to the Republican Party has sparked immediate and fierce backlash from local GOP figures, including Trever Nehls, former Republican candidate for Fort Bend County Judge.
In a sharply worded statement released Tuesday, Nehls accused George of making the party switch not out of ideological alignment, but out of political desperation. “This isn’t about principles. It’s about panic,” Nehls said.
George, who has served as Fort Bend County Judge since 2018, faces mounting legal challenges. He was recently indicted on charges involving the alleged use of fake social media accounts to spread misinformation, including racially charged posts, in what prosecutors say was an effort to manipulate public opinion during past elections.
Trever Nehls, a prominent local Republican and former opponent of George, claimed that he was among the targets of these alleged smear campaigns. “I saw how low he was willing to go,” Nehls said. “This isn’t a shift in beliefs. It’s a calculated move to escape accountability.”
The indictment has raised serious questions about the future of George’s political career. While switching parties is not uncommon in Texas politics — particularly in rapidly changing suburban counties like Fort Bend — doing so under the shadow of criminal charges has drawn skepticism from both sides of the aisle.
Political analysts note that George’s move comes at a time when Fort Bend County, one of the most diverse in Texas, remains highly competitive between Democrats and Republicans. His defection to the GOP could shake up local political dynamics heading into the 2026 elections.
However, Nehls was clear in warning voters not to be swayed by what he called a rebranding effort. “The people of Fort Bend remember. They remember the lies, the fake accounts, and the abuse of public trust. A party label doesn’t erase any of that,” he said.
George has yet to publicly respond to Nehls’ statement. His legal team has denied all allegations, calling the charges politically motivated and promising a vigorous defense in court.
As the political fallout continues, Fort Bend residents are watching closely. With court proceedings ahead and the 2026 campaign season looming, KP George’s political future — and the broader partisan balance in one of Texas’ key suburban counties — may be hanging in the balance.
