‘Broke Both His Legs’: Shoplifter Jumps from 2nd Floor of Galleria, Lands on Ice Rink in Shocking Escape Attempt

HOUSTON, TX — In a dramatic and dangerous turn of events at Houston’s iconic Galleria Mall, a suspected shoplifter was hospitalized after leaping from the second floor in an attempt to evade arrest — only to land directly on the shopping center’s ice skating rink below.

According to Houston Police, the incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon when store security alerted authorities about an individual allegedly caught shoplifting. As officers moved in, the suspect bolted, racing through the crowded shopping complex.

In a desperate move, the man reportedly vaulted over the second-story railing, plummeting more than 20 feet before crashing onto the hard ice surface of the rink.

“He broke both of his legs upon impact,” HPD confirmed. First responders quickly secured the area, and paramedics transported the man to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. His condition is considered serious but not life-threatening.

The shocking spectacle unfolded before stunned shoppers and families enjoying a casual weekend at the mall. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic and surreal.

He just jumped — everyone screamed. We couldn’t believe what we were seeing,” said mall visitor Laura Menendez.

Police say the suspect will face multiple charges once he is medically cleared, including theft and evading arrest.

This incident raises renewed concerns about retail theft, mall safety, and the extreme lengths some individuals go to avoid capture.

As the Galleria — one of Houston’s busiest shopping destinations — continues to draw large crowds this summer, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious behavior.

No bystanders or mall staff were injured during the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
