Houston, TX – Houston-area officials are urging residents to prepare for a hard freeze and potential wintry precipitation as the region faces its second arctic front of 2025.
Freezing Temperatures Expected
The National Weather Service (NWS) updated its forecast on Jan. 16, predicting that most of the Houston area will experience temperatures plummeting into the 20s starting Monday, Jan. 20. With strong winds accompanying the front, wind chill values could make it feel even colder.

Chance of Wintry Precipitation
NWS forecasters have indicated a chance of frozen precipitation, such as sleet or snow, late Monday into Tuesday. However, there remains uncertainty regarding the amount of moisture that will accompany the cold air.

“Please remain weather aware since it takes very little wintry precipitation to cause issues here in southeast Texas,” the NWS shared in a social media update on Jan. 16.
Safety Precautions Recommended
Officials are urging residents to take precautions against freezing temperatures, including:
• Protecting exposed pipes to prevent freezing and bursting.
• Checking on vulnerable neighbors, the elderly, and pets.
• Avoiding travel on potentially icy roads if wintry precipitation occurs.

Residents should monitor updates from local authorities and stay informed about changes in the forecast.
