Who Cares About Our Youth? Texas Lawmakers Address AI, Education, and the Future of Young Texans

HOUSTON, Texas — The future of Texas youth was the focus of a special media briefing hosted by Houston Community Media as part of its three-part “Who Cares About Our Youth?” interview series. The virtual event brought together Texas legislators and members of the media for an open discussion on the challenges facing today’s students and the role of lawmakers in shaping a stronger future.

The series featured Texas State Representatives Gene Wu and Jolanda Jones, who shared their perspectives on issues affecting children and teenagers across the state, including education, mental health, technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and the growing influence of social media. Following their presentations, both lawmakers answered questions from journalists during an interactive media briefing.

Representative Gene Wu emphasized that investing in children through quality education, family support, and community programs is essential to creating safer and stronger communities. He highlighted the importance of addressing challenges early in a child’s life, saying that prevention and opportunity are far more effective than responding after problems arise.

Representative Jolanda Jones focused on one of the most pressing issues facing today’s youth—the rapid rise of artificial intelligence and social media. While acknowledging that AI has the potential to enhance education, she cautioned against allowing technology to replace fundamental learning skills. Jones stressed that students must first develop strong reading, writing, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities before relying on AI tools.

She also expressed concern over the mental health effects of social media, noting that constant exposure to unrealistic online lifestyles and digital pressure can negatively impact young people’s confidence, emotional well-being, and ability to distinguish reality from curated online content.

Throughout the discussion, lawmakers emphasized that preparing young people for the future requires a balanced approach—embracing technological innovation while ensuring students continue to develop independent thinking, resilience, and strong interpersonal skills.

The media briefing also explored the role of parents, educators, policymakers, and community organizations in supporting young Texans as they navigate an increasingly digital world. Journalists raised questions about possible legislative solutions, responsible AI use in classrooms, student mental health resources, and how communities can work together to better prepare the next generation.

Houston Community Media created the “Who Cares About Our Youth?” series to encourage meaningful dialogue between elected officials, the media, and the public on the issues shaping the lives of Texas children and students.

As technology continues to transform education and everyday life, the message from both lawmakers was clear: protecting the future of Texas youth will require collaboration, thoughtful policymaking, and a commitment to ensuring every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive in a rapidly changing world.
