Houston ICE Shooting: Community Meeting Held as Harris County DA Says Investigation Continues

HOUSTON — Community members gathered in Houston’s East End this week to receive updates and ask questions about the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who authorities say was shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent earlier this month while on his way to a construction job.

The public meeting, hosted by Super Neighborhoods 64 and 88, brought together residents, community leaders, and elected officials to discuss the status of the ongoing investigation and address concerns surrounding the incident.

Among those attending were State Senator Carol Alvarado, Houston City Council Member Alejandra Salinas, and Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare.

During the meeting, Teare said his office is conducting an independent investigation to determine whether any state laws were violated. He said investigators are reviewing surveillance footage, collecting evidence, and interviewing witnesses.

“This is an independent investigation. We are investigating state crimes that may have been committed. The medical examiner ruled Mr. Salgado’s death a homicide,” Teare said.

The district attorney acknowledged that the investigation initially encountered challenges in obtaining information from federal authorities. However, he said cooperation has improved with the involvement of the Texas Rangers.

“Thanks to the Texas Rangers coming in, we have more clarity from both the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. We are on our way to getting a real picture of what happened,” Teare said.

Teare encouraged anyone with information related to the shooting to contact the Harris County District Attorney’s Office as investigators continue to gather evidence.

The fatal shooting has drawn significant public attention and prompted calls from community members for transparency and accountability. Federal authorities have not publicly released additional details regarding the incident, and no findings have been announced by the ongoing investigations.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office emphasized that its inquiry is independent of any federal review and remains active.
