WASHINGTON — The Pakistan American Press Association (PAPA) hosted a prestigious joint celebration in Washington commemorating the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence and Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day, bringing together diplomats, government and political leaders, journalists, academics, business executives, community leaders and prominent Pakistani Americans.

The event celebrated more than two national milestones. It highlighted the enduring connections between two nations, two flags and two visions of freedom, while recognizing the Pakistani American community’s contributions to both countries.

For millions of Pakistani Americans, Pakistan represents their roots, heritage and identity, while the United States is home and a land of opportunity where generations have built their lives and pursued their dreams.

The program opened with a prayer by Hafiza Noor, following an invitation from Madiha Masood. Senior journalist Saqib-ul-Islam, who served as master of ceremonies, delivered the opening remarks, drawing parallels between the democratic values, equality, tolerance and freedom envisioned by Pakistan’s founder, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and the principles of liberty and human rights associated with America’s founding.

Attendees stood in respect for the national anthems of Pakistan and the United States, creating a powerful moment of unity and patriotism.

PAPA General Secretary Yousaf Chaudhry delivered the introductory remarks, while PAPA President Khurram Shahzad addressed the gathering and emphasized the role of Pakistani American journalists, community service and people-to-people engagement in strengthening ties between Pakistan and the United States.

The program also featured remarks from Judge Amina Khan, Pakistani American leader Dr. Sajid Tarar and American Muslim civil rights leader Zainab Chaudhry.

Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, was the chief guest. In his address, Sheikh said Pakistan-U.S. relations have rarely appeared as positive as they do today and emphasized the need to build on recent progress by developing stronger economic foundations and moving toward a sustainable and long-term strategic partnership.

Leadership and Lifetime Achievement Awards

A major highlight of the evening was the presentation of Leadership and Lifetime Achievement Awards recognizing individuals whose contributions have spanned journalism, public service, law, business, social welfare, arts and literature, security and Pakistan-U.S. relations.

Judge Amina Khan was recognized for her work in the judiciary, immigration law and public service. Police Chief Kamran Afzal received an award for leadership in U.S. law enforcement and community service, while Dr. Sajid Tarar was honored for his political and community contributions.

Veteran journalist Anwar Iqbal received a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his distinguished career in journalism.

Azim Mian, of Geo News and Daily Jang, was also honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for more than five decades of journalism and his contributions to promoting greater understanding between Pakistan and the United States. Mian has reported from major international centers including the United Nations, the White House, the U.S. State Department and Capitol Hill.

Naveed Butt was recognized for more than four decades of service involving the U.S. military, law enforcement and international security.

Dr. Beenna Goindi received an Arts and Journalism Award for her contributions to literature, poetry, journalism, education and broadcasting.

Columnist, author, television analyst and international consultant Abdul Rauf Shakoori was honored for his professional contributions to public policy, governance and international affairs.

Mian Tahir Ismail received a Leadership Excellence Award for his contributions to business, philanthropy and community service, while Muhammad Saleem received the Leadership Award for Technology and Training in recognition of his work in technology, training, entrepreneurship and community development.

Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh was also presented with the PAPA Lifetime Achievement Award for his diplomatic service and efforts to strengthen Pakistan-U.S. relations.

Journalism Excellence Awards

The ceremony also paid tribute to Pakistani American journalists and media professionals from across the United States through the Journalism Excellence Awards.

Honorees included Faqir Naqvi, whose journalism career spans more than 45 years; Dallas-based Geo and Jang senior journalist Raja Zahid Khanzada; international broadcast journalist Aziz Ahmed, who has more than 25 years of experience covering war zones, elections, humanitarian crises and international diplomatic gatherings; Uzma Gul of Dunya News; video, camera and digital journalist Zeeshan Tahir; video journalist Umar Farooq Jan; senior journalist and financial analyst Asadullah Khalid; Express News U.S. correspondent Fazal Khaliq; New York-based Awaaz News bureau chief Muhammad Farrukh; Voice of South Asia bureau chief Faheem Mian; New York-based HUM News bureau chief Moez Asad Siddiqui; Philadelphia-based Awaaz News bureau chief Qazi Naveed; Houston-based digital media journalist Madiha Masood; and Washington, D.C.-based senior journalist Saqib-ul-Islam.

The awards recognized not only individual accomplishments but also the decades of work by Pakistani American journalists who have served as a bridge between Pakistan and the United States through reporting, dialogue and public engagement.

The ceremony concluded with remarks by PAPA President Khurram Shahzad, followed by a group photograph featuring guests and honorees.

An evening reception and networking dinner followed, giving diplomats, journalists, business leaders, community representatives and other guests an opportunity to connect and exchange views.

The celebration served as a reminder that independence is more than a date on the calendar. It represents a continuing responsibility, a shared value and a commitment to future generations.
