Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office Suspends Academy Training After State Audit Identifies Compliance Issues

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas — The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office has announced a series of corrective actions after a recent inspection by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) identified compliance concerns at the Gus George Law Enforcement Academy.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the audit found procedural deficiencies involving student attendance documentation, the completion and use of standardized forms, and quality assurance processes designed to ensure compliance with TCOLE training standards.

Sheriff Eric Fagan said the agency is taking immediate action to address the issues.

“The people of Fort Bend County deserve honesty and accountability from their Sheriff’s Office. We recognize where improvements are needed, and we are committed to taking the necessary steps to strengthen our processes and ensure continued compliance with TCOLE standards,” Fagan said in a statement.

As part of its response, the Sheriff’s Office has voluntarily suspended operations of its Basic Peace Officer Course (BPOC) while it works with TCOLE to implement corrective measures. The August 2026 cadet class has been postponed, and officials said they are working to graduate the current Class 50 as quickly as possible while ensuring all state training requirements are met.

The Sheriff’s Office also confirmed that an internal review is underway to determine how the compliance concerns occurred and whether any agency policies or procedures were violated. Officials said any findings requiring individual accountability will be addressed through the department’s established disciplinary process.

The agency emphasized that it is cooperating fully with TCOLE and views the audit as an opportunity to strengthen academy operations and reinforce its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and high-quality law enforcement training.

The Gus George Law Enforcement Academy has trained thousands of law enforcement officers over the past four decades, serving agencies throughout Fort Bend County and across Texas. Sheriff’s Office officials said preserving that legacy remains a priority as they work to ensure all future graduates meet the highest professional and regulatory standards.

The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office said it will continue working closely with TCOLE throughout the review process and plans to provide additional updates as they become available.
