HOUSTON, Texas — Houston Mayor John Whitmire announced Tuesday that he intends to visit Pakistan during his second term in office, while praising Pakistani American community leader Muhammad Saeed Sheikh for four decades of humanitarian service at a ceremony recognizing his receipt of Pakistan’s prestigious civil award, the Sitara-e-Khidmat (Star of Service).
The event, hosted by the Consulate General of Pakistan in Houston in collaboration with the Houston-Karachi Sister City Association, celebrated Sheikh’s recognition by President Asif Ali Zardari for his longstanding contributions to community service, philanthropy, and strengthening ties between Pakistan and the United States.








Addressing attendees and later speaking with the media, Whitmire congratulated Sheikh on receiving one of Pakistan’s highest civilian honors, describing his decades of charitable work as an inspiration to communities across Houston.
“I look forward to visiting Pakistan during my second term as mayor,” Whitmire said, adding that community leaders such as Sheikh have played an important role in building lasting people-to-people relationships between the two countries.

As part of the ceremony, Whitmire presented an official City of Houston proclamation declaring July 21, 2026, as “Muhammad Saeed Sheikh Day.” The proclamation recognizes Sheikh’s decades of humanitarian service, civic leadership, and efforts to promote international friendship and cooperation through the Houston-Karachi Sister City Association.
Among those attending the ceremony were Consul General Aftab Chaudhry, businessman Syed Javed Anwar, Democratic community leader Tahir Javed, former Pakistan Test cricketer Sikander Bakht, and numerous Pakistani American community leaders, business executives, and civic representatives.












Speaking to the media, Syed Javed Anwar said Sheikh’s lifelong commitment to charitable work made him a deserving recipient of the Sitara-e-Khidmat, adding that his service has positively impacted communities in both the United States and Pakistan.
Consul General Aftab Chaudhry described the award as a source of pride for the Pakistani American community, saying Sheikh’s humanitarian contributions reflect the positive role of the diaspora in strengthening bilateral goodwill.
Accepting the recognition, Muhammad Saeed Sheikh thanked the President of Pakistan, the Government of Pakistan, the Consulate General, the Houston-Karachi Sister City Association, and members of the Pakistani American community for their continued support. He said the honor would further motivate him to continue serving humanity and promoting community welfare.
Several prominent business and community leaders, including Shaukat Muradia, Pakistan Chamber of Commerce President Aamir Piprani, Masroor Javed Khan, and Tahir Bhatti, also congratulated Sheikh on receiving the national honor. Sheikh additionally expressed gratitude to the event’s organizing committee and volunteers for hosting the recognition ceremony.
The event underscored the growing relationship between Houston and Pakistan, highlighting the role of civic leaders and the Pakistani American community in strengthening cultural, humanitarian, and international partnerships.
