Tropical Storm Bertha Nears Texas Coast, Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Houston and Galveston

HOUSTON:TX — A Tropical Storm Watch was issued Thursday for Galveston and much of the Upper Texas Coast as Tropical Storm Bertha moved toward the Texas Gulf Coast, with forecasters warning of heavy rainfall, gusty winds and the potential for localized flooding across Southeast Texas.

The National Weather Service said rain chances will increase throughout the day, with the heaviest precipitation expected along the Interstate 10 corridor and communities south toward the Gulf Coast. While Bertha is not forecast to become a major hurricane before reaching the Texas coast, officials urged residents to remain alert as weather conditions could change.

Emergency management officials encouraged residents in Houston, Galveston and surrounding coastal communities to review hurricane preparedness plans, assemble emergency supplies and closely monitor official forecasts.

“Even a tropical storm can produce hazardous conditions, including flooding, dangerous surf and strong wind gusts,” emergency officials said, urging motorists to avoid driving through flooded roadways and to secure loose outdoor objects.

The storm is also expected to bring a break from the intense heat that has affected Southeast Texas this week. After Houston reached a record high of 102 degrees on Wednesday, increased cloud cover and widespread rainfall are forecast to keep temperatures in the mid-90s on Thursday.

Forecasters said Bertha’s track and intensity will continue to be monitored, and additional watches or warnings could be issued if conditions warrant. Residents are advised to stay informed through updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management agencies as the storm approaches.
